African Ecocriticism through a writter's perspective
This lecture was also given by Sarah Beukens, as it was a continuation of the last lecture. We talked about African Ecocriticism, but this time through the persepective of a writer. We read 'The Beggar's Strike' by Snow Fall to frame the lecture and guide us through the subject.
First, we continued on ecocritism, with themes as waste and pollution. This theme was also present in my last post. I think that tourism is a very important factor in this. Eco-tourism is new and upcoming, and hopefully it can help Africa control the damage done by tourists. We have always done eco-tourism, because we find this important.
We talked about different themes that were present in the novel and also part of real life in Africa. A large aspect was the representation of beggars (not fully unexpected because of the title) in Africa. This is, next to pollution, a big issue in Africa. Another aspect of the novel was the representation of women.
