On African Feminism

This week, we talked about African feminism and the way it differs from Western feminism. I found the class very interesting, because it brought my attention to how much racism there is in the world. Even in movements such as feminism, which is a battle for gender equality, there is no equality between races. That really shocked me. It was mainly the TED-talk by Elma Akob and te struggles she experienced when trying to be a feminist that I found really interesting.
This is once more the proof that Africa seems to be left out when we talk about 'universal' experiences or issues. That in itself is a really big issue. That this is even extended to feminism is, to me, really sad. I admire the battle that Elma Akob has been having, as well as her perseverance. I hope that one day this kind of issue no longer exists. Because 'in the Western world, feminism is a battle for equality. In Africa, feminism is a battle for survival'.
This view on feminism is so different because of the difference in history and culture between the continents and even the countries. I believe that it is important to keep in mind that feminism should be a personal experience and not a universal one. It is about women and their individuality fighting inequality in whatever way, however they feel. That is somtheing that seems to be forgotten, and I hope it soon becomes a fixed value once more.
